I am Richard I ‘the Lionheart’, patron of the house and probably Dürnstein’s first prominent guest – albeit not entirely of my own free will. Upon my return from the Third Crusade, I fell into the hands of Duke Leopold V of Austria, with whom I had fallen out in the Holy Land. Thus, my journey did not take me straight back to England, but to Dürnstein as a prisoner.
