The lovingly restored, historic vineyard at the foot of Dürnstein Castle ruins is owned by the Thiery family and produces first-class Riesling.
The Dürnstein Castle Vineyard
The Dürnstein castle vineyard looks back on an exceptionally long history. Its origins date back to the time of Charlemagne, when terraces for viticulture were created on the steep castle hill. Powerful dry-stone walls made of Gföhler gneiss still characterise its appearance today, making it an important testimony to the cultural landscape of the Wachau.
For centuries, the vineyard has been closely linked to the history of Dürnstein – from Richard the Lionheart and the Kuenring dynasty to Emperor Leopold I. Following extensive restoration, it is once again home to more than 1.000 vines. The Riesling grapes produce mineral, distinctive wines whose labels feature the knight’s seal of Richard the Lionheart.
