The Kuenring dynasty used the exceptional location between rock and the Danube to build the castle, town walls and monasteries. During the Counter-Reformation, Dürnstein gained its distinctive Baroque appearance in the 18th century.
The abbey tower, designed by Matthias Steinl and Joseph Mungenast, is particularly remarkable, combining Christian symbolism with references to Roman antiquity. Reliefs depicting the Passion of Christ raise questions about truth and justice. Since its restoration in 1986, the tower has been characterised by its distinctive Celestino blue colour.
Today, the tower is regarded as one of the most famous landmarks of the Wachau and a visible symbol of Dürnstein’s historical development spanning more than two millennia.
