At the end of the 19th century, “Richard Löwenherz” in Dürnstein became an important meeting place for the Wachau’s artistic community. Landscape painters such as Max Suppantschitsch, Emil Jakob Schindler, Emil Strecker and Franz von Zülow found inspiration, hospitality and a sense of community here.
The Thiery host family played a decisive role in shaping the house: Fanny Thiery and later her son Raimund maintained close relationships with artists and transformed the inn into a cultural hub. Many artists left visible traces behind – from the inn sign and frescoes to painted doors and works of art. The artists’ regulars’ table, in particular, became a legendary place for creative exchange.
“Richard Löwenherz” is therefore a remarkable example of the connection between art, hospitality and the Wachau way of life, preserving memories of a defining era in the region’s cultural history around the year 1900 to this day.

Dr. Gottfried Thiery was born in Dürnstein, is a lawyer and a dedicated guardian of the Wachau’s cultural heritage. For decades, he has been researching the history of Dürnstein, Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine. As an author, publisher and expert on the region, he combines historical research with a deep personal passion.
