Dürnstein Abbey
The former Augustinian monastery in Dürnstein is picturesquely situated on a rock overlooking the Danube. The Baroque renovation gave rise to the monastery church, with its magnificently decorated interior and warm colours, along with its landmark, the blue tower. Adjacent to the church is a Baroque cloister housing art-historical treasures, as well as the crypt. In the permanent exhibition ‘Discovering What Is Valuable’, you are invited to reflect on ‘the Good – the Beautiful – the True’.
Melk Abbey
Melk Abbey is one of Austria’s most significant Baroque buildings. Visitors can explore the Imperial Staircase, the modern Abbey Museum housed in the former imperial apartments, the Marble Hall and the Abbey Library with its frescoes by Paul Troger. The balconies overlooking the Danube, the world-famous Abbey Church and the Abbey Park with its Baroque garden pavilion are particularly noteworthy and are true gems of Melk Abbey.
Göttweig Abbey
The Baroque abbey complex is situated in a magnificent mountainous setting at the eastern end of the Wachau, south of the town of Krems. Among the attractions are the museum in the Imperial Wing, which hosts annual exhibitions from the abbey’s art collections; the Imperial Staircase with its magnificent ceiling fresco by Paul Troger; the richly decorated princely and imperial chambers; and the abbey church with its crypt and the partially preserved cloister.
Aggstein Castle Ruins
Perched high above the Danube with breathtaking views of the Wachau World Heritage Site, Aggstein is Austria’s most famous castle ruin – and for good reason. A trip to this imposing fortress with its legendary history is an experience not just for children. You can explore almost all the walls via numerous viewing walkways. There’s also the chance to discover the castle’s secrets through adventure games! On three different game routes, you’ll need to use logic, tactics and team spirit to solve puzzles together and free one of the ghosts! A unique holiday treat for children and adults alike!
Schallaburg Renaissance Castle
About 5 km from Melk lies one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles north of the Alps. The two-storey arcaded gallery adorned with terracotta, the Romanesque residential castle, the Gothic chapel and the gardens leave a lasting impression. Of particular interest are the cultural-historical and archaeological exhibitions, which change annually, set against a stunning historical backdrop.
