The article “Those Romans are crazy!” shows how profoundly Roman rule changed life along the Danube. Military camps such as Vindobona, Lauriacum and Carnuntum developed into urban centres with roads, trade, administration, legal systems, medical care, education, baths and taverns.
The legions brought not only soldiers, but also craftsmen, engineers, doctors and builders to the region. The Danube became an important transport and trade route of the Roman Empire. Roman estates ensured the supply of regional food, while wine, olive oil and other goods were traded over long distances. Bathing culture, hygiene, entertainment and culinary pleasures also shaped everyday life.
The Pax Romana therefore created essential foundations for culture, economy and social life in what is now Austria. Many of these achievements continue to influence European culture to this day.
