Fried chicken has been a speciality of Viennese cuisine since the 18th century; it is one of those dishes steeped in history and has always been prepared here at our restaurant.
Classics of Viennese cuisine
Once, during the Biedermeier period, enjoying a Backhendl was regarded as a symbol of the aristocracy’s prosperity. And who knows: King Richard the Lionheart of England might well have enjoyed it whilst imprisoned in Dürnstein. Although the English translation, ‘fried chicken’, doesn’t sound nearly as good as ‘Backhendl’. The word lacks the breadcrumb coating, the refinement and the fine flavour. Today, the Backhendl has long since become a timeless classic and is an indispensable part of our restaurant.
The pleasure of a Backhendl that is juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside makes us feel like kings and queens time and time again.
